<description>One of a series of four films made by the U.S. Department of State and directed by Paul Auerswald to celebrate the nation's bicentennial, THE ROAD TO INTERDEPENDENCE tells the story of foreign policy from V-E Day in Europe in 1945, through the year 1976. The film begins with wonderful color footage of V-E Day in Europe and the collapsed and devastated Nazi state in Germany, before swiftly moving into the territory of the Cold War and the atomic age. President Truman's response of Containment is explained. Various conflicts are shown around the world including the Greek Civil War, the Berlin Crisis and airlift, the formation of NATO, the Chinese Civil War (includes footage of Mao ), the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The Space Race is also profiled at the 11 minute mark, and the U-2 crisis at the 12 minute mark. Fidel Castro and the Bay of Pigs is seen at the 12 minute mark, and the building of the Wall in Berlin is seen at 12:30. The Cuban Missile Crisis is seen immediately thereafter. Beginning at the 14:00 mark, more extensive footage of the Vietnam War is seen. The strategic arms race between the Soviet Union and the USA is also discussed at the 19:00 mark, with images of Soviet SSBN missiles. Richard Nixon's visit to the Soviet Union and China is seen at the 21:00 mark, with Nixon signing an arms treaty with the Russians. The Middle East is also discussed at the 25 minute mark, with the 1973 war shown, and the work of Henry Kissinger. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
