The film opens at mark 00:27 with a global illustration focusing on the area as a narrator explains how the 4,000-mile path of the Amazon begins in the Andes Mountains and cuts across the tropical lowland of South America to the Atlantic Ocean. This is followed by aerial views of the river as the Brazilian narrator explains at mark 01:20 how the river is the only way to reach some otherwise impenetrable South American regions. The narrator explains at mark 01:58 how during Brazil’s six-month rainy season, the river can rise up to 50 feet which can wash away vegetation and minerals in topsoil, making the ground fertile only for certain tropical rainforest vegetation but not food crops. “So in spite of its abundant vegetation the Amazon lowland is sometimes called a green desert,” the narrator says at mark 02:33. As the film continues, the narrator explains some of the waterways allow Brazilians to access areas where they can gather Brazil nuts (mark 03:40) or other nuts, as well as wild rubber trees (04:10), with men shown how they use the latex they collect to make items such as rubber shoes. Many who live in the Amazon are able to use nuts, rubber, and other material in trade with other settlements and market towns (mark 07:10). At mark 09:40 the film takes its viewer to visit a family that lives along the river as we catch a glimpse of everyday life in the Amazon, from their hammock beds to the cookhouse used to prepare meals, while starting at mark 15:25 we watch as the women make fishing nets used almost daily by the men of the family. Mark 18:10 takes the viewer to the city of Manaos (Manaus), Brazil, a principle shipping port for the vast region that is accessible only by water, and we see scenes of various products being loaded onboard various vessels and the films nears an end.
