It was shot by famed photographer Margaret Bourke-White, and is known as her first (and last) attempt at filmmaking. The film was made possible thanks to a donation of 20,000 feet of film by Kodak. Bourke-White was an American photographer and documentary photographer and the first foreign photographer permitted to take pictures of Soviet industry under the Soviets' first five-year plan. She was also the first American female war photojournalist, and took a photograph (of the construction of Fort Peck Dam) that became the cover of the first issue of Life magazine 00:00: Margaret Bourke-White, famed photographer, introduces a journey through Russia, starting at Baku on the Caspian Sea. 0:27: Baku, an ancient, picturesque city with a history of Arab and Persian rule, now Russian for over a century, is a key oil center. 0:48: Camels deliver materials to industrial projects, contrasting with modern apartments symbolizing culture through shower baths. 1:20: A marketplace blends ancient and modern, where peasants trade and Soviet shops offer limited, low-cost goods based on worker ratings. 1:54: Pre-revolution oil concessions, once foreign-owned, are now Soviet-run with American engineers aiding development. 2:42: Oil wells drilled under the Caspian Sea; women brigades perform heavy reclamation work. 3:06: Women undertake construction, mining, and concrete pouring, exemplified by Kad Zukova’s Lenin-awarded leadership. 3:37: A former prince, now a modest Soviet citizen, advises on wine production after losing his Georgian vineyards. 4:33: Georgians pride themselves on wine, following customs like drinking from horns; tribes maintain unique dialects and traditions. 5:36: Joseph Stalin, a famous Georgian, hails from Tiflis, where his mother lives in a historic mountain town. 6:11: The Dnieper Dam, a massive Soviet project led by Colonel Cooper, harnesses the river for hydroelectric power. 7:12: Completed under the 5-year plan, the dam’s dedication draws thousands, broadcast globally with Lenin’s electrification slogan. 8:04: Education is prioritized; married students receive support and study medicine to serve remote areas. 8:37: Parades of factory workers reflect Russia’s shift from agriculture to industry, symbolizing progress in a global drama. 9:06: Farewell to Russia’s steady ascent. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
