This particular account is a more “contemporary” account of previous Schley Ride episodes to Acapulco Bay and Mexico City, Mexico. The installment highlights the natural beauty of Acapulco Bay and the cultural phenomena of Mexico City through a montage of film footage. Acapulco coastline as seen from window (0:08). Women cross street in the city center (0:10). Tourists sunbathe by the hotel pool of Hotel De Las Americas (0:17). Beach club Club Sirocco (0:40)...interestingly a restaurant still exists in the city with this name! Portraits of local boys (0:58). Home built into solid rock of Acapulco’s famous cliffs (1:02). Golf course that was the former airfield for the airport (1:06). Local boys and fishermen at the dock (1:29). Caleta Beach of Western Side of Acapulco Bay (1:50). Sunglass vendor (2:06). La Quebrada Cliffs (2:16). Villas of El Mirador Hotel (2:29). Passengers waiting on tarmac to board what appears to be Aeromexico plane, probably a Douglas DC-6 (2:41). Neon sign and light displays advertisements in downtown Mexico City (3:45) including a sign for Elgin Watches, Kodak (3:47), Victor Adding Machines (3:49), Dos Equis cerveza (3:52), Goodrich tires (3:55), Carta Blanca beer (4:00) and more. The roof of what may be the Palacio Bella Artes illuminated at night (4:07). People gather outside the practice bullfighting arena (4:35). Plaza de Toros Monumental de México (5:48). Statue of Manuel Rodriguez ‘Manolete’ at the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City (5:59). Ceremonial procession of toreadors and horse riders at the Plaza de Toros stadium (6:57). Bullfighting (7:54-13:08). Perhaps Jardín de Santiago (13:21). Ending scenes on an American Airlines plane, heading home (14:22). Closing credits (14:53). Tourism to Mexico rose in popularity in the mid-twentieth century around the time when the Mexican government began to heavily promote Mexico to foreign tourists. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s the Mexican government developed beach resorts in Acapulco under president Miguel Alemán. Acapulco became a preferred getaway for Hollywood stars and millionaires. Mexico City was poised as a bustling capital where tourists could observe cultural spectacles and stunning displays of architecture.
