"Football Forecasts" was sponsored by Amoco that ran for at least two years under Amoco sponsorship. (Earlier versions of the show may date as far back as 1955, when DuPont sponsored a Frank Leahy-hosted football show.) The series features animations interjected throughout, rapid fire narration and segments of actual football games. This particular episode features notable sports star Frank Leahy sharing predictions about the coming season. It features footage of various teams including the UCLA Bruins, Penn State and North Carolina. It also mentions the late coach Red Sanders who died in 1958; so most likely this episode dates to 1959. The American Oil Company (:13) presents the series; animated advertisements for AMOCO interrupt the episode. It's believed that Rudolph Ising created these brief cartoons. Frank Leahy the host of the show was a former player, coach, college athletics administrator and professional sports executive. Leahy served as the general manager for the LA Chargers of the American Football League during their inaugural year; 1960. AMOCO was one of the largest producers and marketers of petroleum products in the United States prior to being purchased by BP British Petroleum in 1998. The film begins at an AMOCO service station (:15). An AMOCO rep introduces Frank Leahy (:45). The AMOCO advertisement (1:10) boasts an untainted and fine fuel source.  A Ford Fairlane runs down the highway (1:39). A servicing check list follows (1:47). The AMOCO rep and Frank discuss the upcoming football season (2:20). The first game of the season was to be the UCLA Pittsburgh game (2:50). Red Sanders (2:53) is photographed. Sanders had a compelling career; in 1954 his UCLA team was named National Champions. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1996. A historical combination pass from Don Long to Dick Wallen (3:02) is captured in a game between Illinois and the Bruins. The sensational one handed catch is pictured at (3:03). At the time the Bruins were in contention for the championship of the waning Pacific Coast Conference. Pittsburg capitalizes on their opponent’s mistake (3:20) delivering the Panthers a touchdown. The Pitt player blocks a kick (3:26).  A Kansas versus TCU game follows (3:47). Jack Mitchell had recently taken over as coach over Kansas. TCU's quarterbacks are discussed (4:05). The full back carries and the half back leads in the offensive (4:11). Kentucky faces off against Georgia Tech (4:37). Slow motion footage shows Stan Flowers making a pass (4:48). The quarterback (5:15) throws a touchdown pass. Georgia Tech takes the win (5:33). Nebraska faces off against Penn State (5:37). Richie Lucas makes a break (5:55). Penn State takes the win. North Carolina state faces off against Nebraska (6:41). North Carolina (7:13) make a pass. Their junior quarterback; Jack Cummings (7:19) demonstrates his throwing ability following a completed pass. The open receiver makes the catch (7:26). AMOCO interrupts with an oil advertisement (7:50). Frank displays the rule changes on the chalkboard (8:53). Duke faces off against South Carolina (9:54). Ray Carlton makes a touchdown (10:12). Duke takes the win (10:22). Baylor faces off against Arkansas (11:25). A ground view captures a tackle (11:49). Texas plays against Georgia (12:22). A quick play shows the quarterback fakes back to the full back (12:51). Frank calls a win from Texas over Georgia (13:15). This film was presented by the American Oil Company (13:31). For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
