<description>Support Our Channel : https://www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm Directed by Reid H. Ray for John Deere, "Farmer of the Year" dates to the 1950s. This verite drama tells the story of a father and son who team up, under the system of conservation farming, to increase productivity on their family farm. The father wins "Farmer of the Year" honors but (spoiler alert) honors his son in the process. The film tells the story of Tom Gordon, a traditional farmer resistant to adopting soil conservation practices despite increasing erosion on his land. His son Ralph, passionate about sustainable farming, works with local conservationist Mr. Crandle to persuade Tom to attend a meeting featuring an influential speaker. With encouragement from neighbors and a pivotal confrontation from his wife, Tom reluctantly attends and reconnects with an old friend, which leads him to finally enroll in the conservation program. Ralph takes the lead in implementing terraces, crop rotation, and gully restoration, resulting in improved yields and preserved topsoil. At the annual banquet, Tom is awarded "Farmer of the Year" but chooses to give the honor to Ralph, who then credits his mother for inspiring their success. The story highlights the importance of community, family, and generational change in advancing soil conservation. 0:00 – Opening credits with music and applause. 0:58 – Mr. Adams and a journalist begin discussing Tom Gordon and his resistance to soil conservation efforts. 1:52 – It's revealed Tom was slow to adopt conservation but his son Ralph was eager and proactive. 2:28 – A community meeting highlights local conservation progress. 3:08 – Ralph expresses frustration that his father still refuses to participate. 3:54 – A plan is set in motion to get Tom to attend the upcoming meeting featuring a regional speaker. 4:47 – Ralph receives a phone call from Mr. Crandle inviting Tom to sit at the speaker's table. 6:15 – Tom angrily realizes it was a setup to get him to the meeting and refuses to be tricked. 6:56 – Ralph's mother finally confronts Tom about his excuses and lack of action. 7:55 – Tom attends the meeting, reconnects with old friend Bradley, and eventually signs up for the conservation program. 8:20 – Ralph and Mr. Crandle assess the farm’s erosion issues and create a conservation plan. 9:14 – The cropping plan and land-use map for the farm is explained, including terraces and rotation. 10:45 – Ralph begins building terraces himself using basic tools, showing skill and commitment. 11:59 – Ralph fills in a gully and converts it to a grassed waterway. 12:08 – By July, the farm shows major improvements with no visible erosion. 13:04 – The family reflects on how the conservation work retained moisture and improved yields. 14:10 – Tom is impressed by a 10-bushel per acre yield increase and the overall results. 15:06 – At the banquet, Tom struggles to practice his acceptance speech. 16:52 – Tom receives the award for “Farmer of the Year.” 17:27 – Tom humbly gives the award to Ralph, crediting him for the real work. 18:08 – Ralph then credits his mother as the one who truly made it all possible. 18:28 – The end.
