<description>Produced and hosted by Charles Kinsley and Jack Streb for Eastman Kodak Co., Hawaiian Movie Trails is a short film from the 1960s that gives viewers a tour of the Hawaiian Islands while providing tips on how to better photograph and film a visit to the Pacific island chain. The film opens with Charles and Jack talking in a living room about how to photograph Hawaii. The film then shows palm trees, women hula dancing, and Waikiki Beach (01:00). A man surfs on small waves at Waikiki. Close-up shots show some of the islands’ flowers. Waves crash over lava rocks. There are scenes of volcanic eruptions with magma spewing into the air. The film also shows dried lava flows, aerial views of the islands (03:42; 05:02), birds, trees, and cacti. Footage shows impressive views of valleys and rivers and then follows that with portrait shots of various people who call Hawaii home. Two people look at pictographs while hiking. The film documents the Japanese influence in Hawaii, evident with Japanese movie posters plastered on buildings and a large Japanese cemetery (06:40). The film shows viewers some of Hawaii’s Buddhist temples and Christian churches, including the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Lahaina (07:32). Charles and Jack pull up in a pink jeep and watch a man photograph two women with the ocean in the background. They visit Hanalei Valley (08:42) with its rice patties. The two men examine a coconut grove on the large island of Hawaii, then look at Kona’s coffee plants (09:33). Other highlights of the film include the second largest cattle ranch in the U.S.—Parker Ranch (09:57), sugar cane fields, the burning of a sugar cane field, and fields of pineapples. The two hosts share a pineapple with a local farmer. Agriculture workers pick pineapples behind a large machine with conveyer belts (12:07), which move the picked pineapples up to be dumped into waiting trucks. The film then shows the operations of a pineapple canning factory (13:30). Pineapples run through a machine that cuts off the outer skin of the fruit. Women work the assembly lines, slicing the fruit (14:15), which is then canned. A large freighter moves on the water, carrying pineapple from the island (15:32). The film shows visitors arriving on large ocean liners (16:41). Hula dancers perform for the arriving tourists. People play on the sand and in the water at Waikiki Beach (17:27). Footage shows people surfing the waves at Waikiki (18:53), as well as riding in outriggers and catamarans. The modern city of Honolulu features bustling streets (19:29), a statue of King Kamehameha I, a rooftop restaurant with great views of Honolulu (20:29), a shopping center, and an outdoor art exhibit (21:32) with paintings and wood carvings. At Kapiolani Park, site of Kodak’s hula show, visitors pack the stands to watch traditional Polynesian dances and performances. The graceful Lila (most likely Lila Reiplinger) hula dances (22:55). Visitors attempt to learn how to hula dance as part of the show. Footage takes viewers along the rocky coast of Oahu (24:24) and to a scenic pali overlook (“pali” meaning cliff) with great views. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting?
