Kemper for the Lumbermans Mutual Casualty Company, with the technical assistance of the LAPD, "Teenicide" addresses the alarming issue of teenage driving-related deaths. The film referrs to "teenocide" because as the police officer narrator states, there has been an 86% increase in the 15-24 age group over the past 25 years. Despite teenagers having physical advantages, such as sharp vision and quick reflexes, they are often the worst drivers due to inexperience and lack of training. The narrator explains that many teens learn to drive through trial and error, often mimicking poor driving habits from others. The solution to reducing teenicide is through proper driver education, where teens learn safe driving practices, respect for the law, and how to handle a car safely. By emphasizing the importance of good driving habits early on, the goal is to create a generation of responsible drivers and significantly reduce traffic fatalities among young drivers. 00:00 Los Angeles Police Department traffic safety officer at his desk. Images of a hot rod Ford Roadster / Deuce driving recklessly, and then pursued by a motorcycle cop on a freeway. 1:03 - 1:42: The officer discusses how filling out a dead body report is as easy as filling out a traffic ticket, pointing out that speed violations are often the same in both cases. 1:42 - 2:21: The narrator presents statistics showing changes in motor vehicle death rates over the past 25 years, highlighting an 86% increase in deaths in the 15-24 age group, signaling a serious problem with teen driving. 2:21 - 3:03: The concept of "teenicide" is introduced, a term referring to deaths caused by drivers under 20, with the idea that the habits leading to teenicide continue into the 20s. 3:03 - 3:52: A primitive driver simulator is shown in use. The narrator explains that while teenagers have physical advantages such as sharper vision and quicker reactions, their lack of driving experience leads them to be poor drivers. Proper education and training are crucial for their safety. 3:52 - 4:51: The text emphasizes the importance of proper driving education, noting that many teens learn to drive by trial and error, often from poor examples. Proper instruction can help them understand the law and be safer drivers. 1934 Ford Coupe hot rod shown. 4:51 - 5:32: Teens racing hot rods on city streets, like in "Rebel Without a Cause" are shown. Narrator discusses how trained drivers have fewer accidents than untrained drivers. With proper education, teens can become some of the safest drivers. 5:32 - 6:10: The narrator advocates for driver education through cooperation between parents and teachers, encouraging teens to develop good driving habits and ultimately eliminate teenicide. The end. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
