They were created by Doyle Dane Bernbach, an ad agency founded by William Bernbach, Ned Doyle and Maxwell Dane in 1949. The company delivered smart, catchy, soft-sell campaigns. The VW ads were intentionally created to look different from typical American auto commercials, with self-deprecating and sometimes humorous scripts that presented the simple, "smaller" German car as a terrific alternative to "big" Detroit steel. In the end the advertising succeeded wildly. By the time production ended, Volkswagen had built 21,529,464 Beetles, making it the most produced car ever. Ad 1: VW Bug driver in the snow.
