<description>Andre De La Varre is the ‘Screen Traveler’ (:08) and this film will take viewers on tour through Cebu. This is the oldest island in the Philippines (:21).Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain in 1519 on a historic voyage to circumnavigate the globe, passing through the strait later named after him and discovering the Philippine Islands in 1521. He landed on Cebu, made peace with the native chief, and claimed the islands for Spain, but was killed shortly after in a battle on nearby Mactan Island. Following his death, his crew completed the first circumnavigation of the world. Decades later, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi established Spanish rule in the Philippines, with Cebu becoming a vital trade hub known for exports like coconut products and Manila hemp. The city retains much of its Spanish colonial heritage, including historic churches and forts, and remains an important port under American and later Philippine sovereignty. Magellan’s voyage opened a new route to the East and marked the beginning of European influence in the region. 0:49 — In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Spain to circumnavigate the globe, sailing through the strait later named after him. 1:04 — In March 1521, after 19 months at sea, Magellan discovered the Philippine Islands, an archipelago of about 7,000 islands between the Pacific Ocean and the China Sea. 1:22 — On April 7, Magellan landed on the island of Cebu (called Sibu in the text), made a peace agreement with the native chief, and claimed the islands for Spain. 1:36 — Nineteen days later, Magellan was killed trying to subdue another chief on Mactan Island. 1:42 — After Magellan’s death, the remaining crew returned to Spain via the Cape of Good Hope, completing the first circumnavigation. 1:52 — Forty-three years later, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi retraced Magellan’s route, arrived at Cebu, and established Spanish rule over the Philippine archipelago until the Spanish-American War. 2:11 — Cebu was historically an important trade center for ships from China and Malaya, and today remains a major Philippine port exporting coconut products and hemp. 2:37 — Copra, the dried coconut meat used in soap and margarine production, is a principal export shipped from Cebu. 3:26 — Manila hemp, world-famous for making ship ropes and harnesses, is another important Cebu export. 3:52 — Cebu city is built along a protected harbor, shielded by Mactan Island where Magellan died, and still retains much of its Spanish colonial architecture despite American sovereignty since 1898. 5:39 — Cebu is the oldest European settlement in Asia, home to a cross believed to have been erected by Magellan marking his landing site. 6:21 — Historic churches like San Augustin and the city cathedral preserve religious and cultural heritage from Spanish times. 6:40 — The oldest street in the Philippines, Kalier Kolan (Columbus Street), once housed leading families, many with sons in the priesthood. 7:30 — Old Fort San Pedro, founded by Legazpi in 1565, marks the first permanent Spanish settlement in the east, evolving into modern Cebu under Philippine independence and American protection. 8:01 — Cebu’s harbor has grown to accommodate increasing maritime trade, maintaining its status as a cradle of the Philippine nation. 8:18 — Although Magellan did not complete his voyage, he discovered a new route to the east and led the first circumnavigation of the globe. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
