<description>This short silent home movie was shot by an unknown American traveler. It shows a trip to sunny Los Angeles, California in February of 1950. It opens with the flight into the city on an American Airlines plane, probably a Douglas DC-6. The film takes viewers down to the ground for scenes around the blooming city and the iconic Sunset Boulevard aka "Sunset Strip", including a shot of Mickey Cohen's famous storefront. Sunset runs between western and central LA. The story goes, "the Strip" got its name in 1888 as a city employee squinted against the hot sun while heading west. The film opens with an orange yellow sunrise on the horizon (:17) fading to blue. Jagged California land is pictured below (:38) with a wing tip in the high right corner. Snow powders the peaks of mountains (1:34). Checkered open land encircle a congested city (2:02). Highways run across, stretching to another city nearby (2:07). The wing cuts through mashed potato thick clouds (2:45). On the ground in Los Angeles, a passenger walks from the boarding stairs (2:51) marked with the American Airlines logo. Commonwealth Avenue in Los Angeles follows (3:03). The Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument known as The Town House (3:19) is pictured. It was erected in 1929 on Wilshire Boulevard near Lafayette Park. Today it operates as low income housing. Simon’s Sandwiches Fountain; a small drive up eatery, is situated nearby (3:23). The travelers enjoy lush green palm trees (3:34). The intersection of Commonwealth and Wilshire follows (3:45). Travelers mingle outside of their hotel (3:54). The Ford Super Deluxe appears (4:02). NBC Radio City West (4:05) served as the headquarters to the NBC Radio Network’s West Coast Operations. This was one of Hollywood’s largest projects. Another sign points to the iconic Sunset Boulevard (4:18). Evening festivities include music from bands known as Tico Robbins Rhumba Band (4:27). Mickey Cohen’s storefront building appears at 8804 Sunset Blvd (4:32) The American gangster and head of the Cohen crime family moved to LA in 1939 to work under Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. He opened this store to headquarter his multi-million dollar underworld empire, installing three of his legit businesses in the building: Michael’s Haberdashery, Courtley Jewelers and his tailor’s shop. The camera pans around the city at evening time capturing 1950’s style cars (4:56). They pause at a drive up eatery (5:11). Dark footage shows a female waitress in yellow approaching the car (5:17). The car peels down the road lined with skinny high palms (5:27). From within the car, pedestrians cross the street (5:35). They follow a car up the notoriously steep inclines (5:40). Pedestrians enjoy park benches (5:48). The travelers’ car bounces down the road again crosses over railroad tracks (6:21). A resident shovels thick snow from their driveway (6:24). The film concludes with these snowy images presumably taken from the travelers’ home after their trip to Los Angeles (6:32).
