<description>AMERICAN COWBOY is a documentary about Gus Roberson, an American cowboy who has a ranch at Gunnison, Colorado. The film is part of the Ford Motor Co.'s "Americans At Home" series, and is narrated by journalist Joseph March and was directed by Larry Madison. The film shows a modern portrait of cattle ranching in the West, showcasing the difficulties of raising animal herds in tough environmental conditions. The film begins with the journalist arriving in Gunnison by steam train, and then picked up by Gus in a Ford pick-up truck. The film lovingly and respectfully shows the homestead ranch. For promoted the film this way: " Today's American Cowboy is very. different from the popular conception of the gun-toting cowhand of the early West. How he really works, lives, and plays is portrayed against the romantic background of the rugged Western range. Filmed in the heart of the Rocky Mountain empire, this lively documentary takes the viewer to Gunnison, Colorado — to the homestead of the Roberson Hereford Ranch. Here you will thrill to the excitement of the round-up, brand ing, life in the bunkhouse, the drive to summer pastures high in the Rockies, the rodeo, and winter feeding in raging blizzards." Interestingly, according to film historian Rick Prelinger, this film was intended to promote the Ford brand without employing explicit advertising and was produced with only a loose script, over the course of a year. The Americans at Home series strove to record American life without excessive scripting. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
