This particular feature looks at the Nile River, it’s geographical location as well as it’s influence on the land around. It opens with images of the Nile River in Egypt (:37). A map notes the location of the river (:49). The Nile is fed by the Blue and the White Nile and later empties out into the Mediterranean Sea. The Libyan and Arabian deserts flank the long river (1:28). The annual flooding of this river creates a green oasis amidst desert arid land (1:47). The location of the major city of Cairo is pointed to on a map (2:12). Merchant vessels bob in the wharf of the Nile (2:19). Goods are unloaded (2:24). Narrow alleyways within the city are lined with bazaars and food markets (2:31). Some goods will be transported out by rail car (2:44). The city’s main drag is littered with modern automobiles most of which are imported (2:55). The Nile remains one of the more common methods of travel (3:02). Moving southward, the camera catches sailing feluccas (3:11). The Great Pyramid of Egypt (3:19). Egyptians move in front of the masses walking alongside camels (3:25). A farmer uses primitive equipment known as the shadoof in order to source water from the Nile (3:43). Water is emptied into the irrigation ditch (3:59). The water wheel is put to use (4:11). A map is provided noting the locations of dams along the great river (4:32). The Aswan Dam is located at the lower end of the Nile (4:41). A farming village squats along the Nile (5:18). Women of the family clean around the house and work to grind beans in a stone mill (5:30). Images follow from within the mud brick home as a simple meal of bread, cheese and melon are set out (5:40). The father and two sons of the family work in the field outside the village (5:53). The son walks with two oxen (6:06). The turban is traditionally used to keep sun and the heat from the top of the head (6:14). A wooden plow is put to use (6:17). The oldest son works on an irrigation ditch (6:44). A field is flooded as the ditches are opened and closed (7:05). A field of corn follows; product imported from the US (7:19). In the nearby village; two daughters retrieve water (7:43). At the village center is a modern clinic, a bath house and a library (8:13). Most classes are taught outside (8:34). The youngest boy of the family rides his donkey (9:06) at the end of the day to the older boys working in the field (9:25). Date palm trees litter the field (9:31). The wooden plow is given to one of the brothers to carry home (9:46). The film concludes with a synopsis of the vitality of the Nile for Egyptian life.
