<description>Made at the time that the 747 jumbo jet was going into service, this Boeing training film "A Rag, a Bone, and a Little Care" was created to show personnel some of the techniques that can be used to clean aircraft surfaces including carpets, bulkheads, and other areas. The use of space-age materials in the aircraft including carpets that were designed to allow easy removal of soiling, makes it much easier than you might think... Commercial jetliners undergo final checkouts and finishing touches before entering airline service, ensuring they are delivered clean and attractive inside and out. Despite efforts to keep the interiors clean, accidents and soil spots can occur, which are often noticed immediately but sometimes go unnoticed, leading to time-consuming and expensive cleaning or replacements. A new method for cleaning aircraft interiors has been developed, requiring minimal tools and knowledge. This method involves understanding how soil adheres to materials like carpet and paneling, using appropriate detergents, solvents, and tools such as bone scrapers to remove soil without damaging the material. The cleaning process includes blotting soft soils, massaging fibers, applying solvents, and using foaming detergents to remove undissolved particles, followed by brushing and vacuuming. Immediate and careful application of these techniques ensures the aircraft interiors remain clean and appealing, benefiting travelers, airlines, and manufacturers by preserving the jetliners' appearance and reducing maintenance costs. 0:07 - 0:26: Commercial jetliners undergo final checkouts and finishing touches. 0:26 - 0:37: Jetliners are kept clean and colorful inside and out during the final touches. 0:37 - 0:54: Accidents happen and are usually noticed right away. 0:54 - 1:24: Sometimes accidents are not noticed until later, making cleaning time-consuming. 1:24 - 1:45: Ineffective cleaning can lead to the removal and replacement of items, which is expensive. 1:45 - 2:10: A new method for cleaning aircraft interiors is developed, requiring minimal tools and knowledge. 2:10 - 2:38: Understanding how soil adheres to interior trim helps in cleaning. 2:38 - 2:57: Soil coats carpet fibers but does not soak in; the cleaner's job is to remove soil without damaging the carpet. 2:57 - 3:47: Cleaning process: blot soft soil, spray detergent, massage fibers with a bone scraper, and remove foam with soil. 3:47 - 4:15: Avoid massaging too hard to prevent carpet damage. 4:15 - 4:53: Apply solvent to loosen soil, blot it up, and repeat as necessary. 4:53 - 5:35: Remaining undissolved particles removed with foaming detergent, followed by brushing and vacuuming. 5:35 - 6:03: Cleaning set soils requires breaking up particles and using solvent. 6:03 - 6:53: Blot up solvent, use a rag for large particles, and apply detergent for remaining soil. 6:53 - 7:36: Similar method for paneling; use solvent with a soft cloth or brush, then detergent, and rinse with water. 7:36 - 8:02: Immediate application of cleaning techniques is key; tools required are simple. 8:02 - 9:23: Proper cleaning ensures aircraft interiors remain clean and attractive, benefiting travelers, airlines, and manufacturers.
