It includes footage from the STS-9 mission (also referred to Spacelab 1). It mainly shows the astronaut crew doing their work, doing daily activities such as eating and exercising, but also shows the crew members playing with their weightlessness. The STS-9 was the ninth NASA Space Shuttle mission and the sixth mission of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Launched on 28 November 1983, the ten-day mission carried the first Spacelab laboratory module into orbit. The mission was highly successful, proving the feasibility of the concept of carrying out complex experiments in space STS-9's six-member crew was the largest of any human space mission at the time, and included John W. Young, Brewster H. Shaw, Owen K. Garriott and Robert A. Parker, Byron K. Lichtenberg, and Ulf Merbold. Credits (00:08). Views of the space shuttle orbiting Earth (00:12). Views of the astronaut crew consisting of Owen Garriott, Byron K. Lichtenberg, Brewster H. Shaw, John Young, Ulf Merbold, Robert A. Parker inside the STS-9 Space Shuttle (01:18). A latch opens on the outside of the space shuttle, then closes (02:56). Views of the open payload bay doors (03:43). Views of the astronaut crew inside working and exercising (03:53). A cylindrical jar floats in a stage of weightlessness inside the space shuttle (04:51). The astronaut crew also experience weightlessness as they move around and work inside the space shuttle (05:14). One astronaut ‘stands’ upside down on the roof and gives a thumbs-up and a thumbs-down (07:17). Point-of-view footage of someone moving from the Space hab to the Columbia Space Shuttle deck (07:39). Views of one crew member working (08:04). Views of other crew members eating food while ‘floating’ in a state of weightlessness (09:08). Views of the other one crew member working in a different area of the space shuttle (10:14). Footage of a crew member on the flight deck (10:33). A latch opens on the outside of the space shuttle, then closes (10:57). Views of all crew members gathering in one area of the shuttle and using the weightlessness to twirl, twist, and float around the room (11:30). Views of Columbia orbiting Earth (14:05). Credits (14:56). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
