The surgery involved transplanting a heart from a 25-year-old woman, Denise Darvall, who had suffered a fatal brain injury, into Louis Washkansky, a 53-year-old man dying of heart failure. Washkansky lived for 18 days after the operation, and his new heart functioned normally until his death from pneumonia.
