<description>Homer ("Mac") McDaniel worked for RCA at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Kennedy Space Center during most of the period 1959 - 1995. He was a technician working on the Range Timing Systems. During that time he supported all launch complexes / pads at both locations. For Florida launches, these timing systems feed UTC and countdown timing to the NASA Space Centers, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and the whole Eastern Test Range. Mac discusses the extent of the range with the help of a map. He gives a history of launch sequencers at the cape including a demonstration of the WORKING Model 4 sequencer on display at the American Space Museum. He also discusses launch complex and pad numbering including why some numbers were never used. (Did you know... Unlike the modern computer controlled launch systems, the first 4 sequencer models were totally electro-mechanical with relays, stepping relays and switches. The digital time displays used incandescent bulbs!) Mac's stories include how there were a record four launches the first day on the job including one that blew up. He had to wait at the gate for the first launch to go before he could report to his new job. Currently retired, Mac has been a dedicated volunteer at the American Space Museum for many years. He arranged for the Air Force to donate the Model 4 Launch Sequencer to the museum. He refurbished it then wired it up for museum display. He is also a museum Docent. Moderated by Mark Marquette, this 12/10/20 interview is part of our museum's "Stay Curious" series and our "Space Workers Oral History" project.
