<description>This color film from 1960 was produced by Fox subsidiary Movietonews Inc. We begin with a Pan American Boeing 707 Jet Clipper (:20-:37) arriving in Istanbul, Turkey, once known as Constantinople. A visitor is served lemonade via a unique dispenser strapped to a local’s back (:48-1:00) while another gets a shoe shine at an elaborate stand (1:01). A gentleman puffs on a nargalay (hooka) of flavored smoke (1:20-1:37). At the many docks, bridges full of people and cars connect the city over two continents (1:38-2:11) as Turkey spans both Europe and Asia. Ferry boats (2:18) are another means of transportation that passes by the Dolmabahce Palace (2:31-2:46), the administration center of the Ottoman Empire from 1856 to 1887 and 1909 to 1922 and now a museum. Within its ground stands a mosque (2:47). Another tourist site is Rumeli Hisari Castle built in 1451 (2:54), where a reenactment of an Ottoman military band, also known as a mehter band, performs using percussion instruments (2:56-4:09). Another exhibit is of the sword and shield dance (4:11-4:42). The Blue Mosque is a favorite place to visit (4:46). Pillars and rocks are all that remains at Bergama, an ancient spa (5:01). The ruins of Ephesus (5:29) were abandoned in the 15th century, and there are many other remnants of statues and Greek culture (5:34-6:03). Every May 19th, a festival celebrating National Youth and Sports Day takes place (6:09), which includes a tall tower made of Navy men balancing on each other’s shoulders (6:25) as female dancers perform (6:27). A U.S. flag flies next to a Turkey flag (6:47) as a sign of friendship. At a hotel pool, a coffee girl dressed in native garb pours guests Turkish coffee (7:17-7:42) as others watch a Turkish fashion show (7:47-8:21). Turkey is also famous for handmade rugs of wool dyed with vegetable materials (8:27-8:51). Copperware is also still hand-produced (8:53-9:16). The ferry path goes from the Straits of the Black Sea through the Bosporus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles to the Aegean Sea (9:42-10:00), with Europe on one side and Asia on the other. Along the European side, the Golden Horn (10:04) neighborhoods exemplify the mix of Greek, Roman, and Turkish cultures. The ferries also go to the Princess Islands on the Sea of Marmara (10:24), where no cars are allowed. The resorts serve exotic meals (10:52) with the Sea as the backdrop as dancers perform traditional folk dances (11:18-11:56).
