Pictures. It tells the heroic story of Captain Hewitt T. Wheless, and is narrated by Lieutenant Ronald Reagan. The film won an Oscar in 1943. It was directed by Lewis Seiler. :44 montage of U.S. Capitol Building, radio towers and telephone poles. President Roosevelt tells of how Captain Hewitt Wheless and his crew distinguished themselves in battle. 01:20 A husband remarks to this wife that he went to university with Wheless. 01:25 A group of airmen comment on how Wheless was one of the airmen’s flight school students. 0:33 A young woman  remarks she once dated Wheless. 01:39 Cowboys on a Texas ranch. One notes Wheless is a pal of his. 01:47 Texas ranch, 1938. Wheless hops a fence and mounts a horse. 02:06 Ranch hands relax on the porch. The radio announces recruiting for the U.S. Army Air Forces. Wheless decides to join. 03:12 Randolph Field in San Antonio, Texas. 03:30 New recruits arrive, suitcases in hand. Wheless watches a Boeing-Stearman Model 75 biplane perform maneuvers. 04:08 Uniformed cadets march past the 52nd Squadron barracks. 04:52 Student pilots in various classes learning about the theory of flight, flight operations, engines, morse code, aeronautical charts and flighting planning. 06:07 Student pilots prepare to mount Boeing-Stearman Model 75 biplanes. Wheless and his flight instructor take off. Wheless is at the controls and performs a barrel role before executing a 3-point landing. Wheless then takes off on his first solo. 07:56 Multiple squadrons of Boeing-Stearman Model 75 fly in Vic formation. 08:13 Wheless and another flight officer walk past a Lockheed AT-18 Hudson on the tarmac. 08:30 Pilots fly Vultee BT-13s, mastering maneuvers. They practice in C-3 Link Trainers and take an high altitude oxygen pressure test. 10:36 A P-36 squadron flies through the air. Wheless and others learn to identify enemy ships by the outline. 11:05 Wheless makes a rough landing in a P-36. 12:07 Students receive their wings. 13:38 B-17Ds parked at March Field. Wheless and crew engage in gunnery and bombing practice. 15:06 Wheless and crew prepare to board their B-17 on standby alert. 15:45 The B-17 takes off. Animation of the plane flying across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii and then to the Philippines. 16:07 President Roosevelt describes the sequence of events of Wheless’ heroic flight as five B-17s depart from base. While in formation, one engine on Wheless’s B-17 fails. His B-17 falls behind. The engine reignites and the flight continues. Eighteen Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zeroes attack. The B-17 gunners fire back. Wheless remembers the flight instructors teachings of staying relaxed and to keep eyes moving. The bombardier spots the target: Japanese transport ships. Zeroes continue strafing the B-17. 18:00 Bombs are dropped and one ship explodes. Zeroes continue to attack the B-17. Four Zeroes are shot down. The B-17’s radio operator is killed, the engineers right hand is shot off, and one side gun gunner is wounded. Three more Japanese planes are destroyed. 19:10 The B-17’s tail gunner shoots an attacking Zero. One engine of the B-17 is shot out, it’s rear landing wheel and two front wheels are shot. 19:50 The exhausted Japanese planes disengage. 20:30 Wheless controls a crash landing, remembering advice given to him in flight school. 21:01 Wheless and his wife listen to Roosevelt on the radio finishing the story. A crowd gathers around Wheless’ home and cheers. A child asks Wheless to autograph his Defense Stamp book. 22:00 Wheless gives a speech at the Boeing Plant in Seattle, Washington, thanking the workers for their excellent work. 22:50 Wheless and officers walk along a flight line of B-17s. He boards the plane and takes off. 23:45 Montage of various US Army Air Forces fighters and bombers in formation. 24:10 END Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
