It is narrated by Peter Donald and directed by Dr. Frank H. Howard, a dentist and the first motion picture ski movie producer in the west. The film describes a humorous and adventurous skiing trip taken by a group of young men. They are inexperienced and face various challenges, from driving to the ski resort to learning how to ski. Despite their lack of skill, they are enthusiastic and determined. They initially dismiss professional instruction, relying instead on a book by Professor Galen Zit, which leads to comical mishaps. Eventually, they realize the value of proper instruction and join a class, improving their skills and meeting interesting people. The narrative emphasizes the fun and excitement of skiing, while also highlighting the importance of learning and practice. 00:00 The movie opens in California with two winter sport novices loading ski equipment into a Bugatti Type 35 car. One of the men hand cranks the engine, allowing internal combustion to begin. 00:45 A sequence of elevation signs show the novices ascending from 1,000 ft to 7,000 ft. 00:52 The two novices pull their luggage of skis as they head to the ski lodge. 01:00 Poolside at the lodge. vacationers bathe, drink tea, relax. A man dives into the pool, snowcapped mountains in the background. 01:21 The two men awkwardly carry their skis through the lodge grounds.01:37 Skiers gather around a bulletin board listing ski school instructors. Some join a class to learn fundamentals.01:53 Buses transport skiers to the slopes. The novices take it all in, and while others orderly board the buses, the novices start throwing snowballs at one another. 02:25 The novices struggle to traverse the snowy mountain alone. 02:31 Someone opens a book titled, Skiing Self Taught. The two novices are sitting on a mountain side in front of a ski school reading the book. An instructor approaches and invites them to join a proper class, but the novices brush him off. 02:50 The novices teach themselves to put on the skis. One pushes himself down a hill only to wipe out in the snow. The two return to the self-help book. They read about “Vorlage” (forward position). 03:05 One of the novices practices leaning forward only to fall flat on his face 03:12 They try a kick turn with disastrous results. Their skis tangle into each other and the two fall down. 03:38 They read about and try a Snowplow turn with equally disastrous results. 03:53 The instructor at Ski School guides a line of ski students through the fundamentals: how to properly start, how to push off, how to safely slow down and stop using the snowplow method. Students practice with proficiency. 04:28 Students watch as the instructor demonstrates a snowplow turn. Students try, are successful but make mistakes like not keeping the heel flat on the ski, knees not bent enough. 05:21 The two novices continue trying to teach themselves to ski. They try an advanced jump only to crash and wind up buried in the snow. 05:36 The novices teach themselves the herringbone technique to climb uphill, but they get nowhere. 06:14 The novice and another ski student attempt to use a rope tow to ascend a hill. The student properly uses the rope tow, the novices demonstrate how not to use it. 06:32 The novices comically demonstrate how not to use a ski chair lift. 06:38 The novices fail to walk up a hill in skis. 06:43 The two novices, skis off, walk dejectedly through a snowfield. They come upon an attractive couple walking arm in arm, effortlessly in skis. 07:00 POV shots driving through snow covered mountain roads. They stop 9,000 ft above sea level and walk along a road cut out of snow 10-20 ft high. They climb ladders to reach the snowfields from the highway. 07:25 Snow covered mountains. 07:30 A group of skiers climb steep snow covered mountains to reach the skiing grounds. A line of skiers, some topless, ascend a rocky summit carrying their skis. 08:00 The two novices finally join a proper ski school, learn fundamentals, and meet new friends. Instructor leads students uphill. 08:26 Students competently ski downhill. 08:40 They rise and fall over moguls (bumps for jumping). Three skiers execute masterful jumps. 09:08 END If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid so that Periscope Film can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
