It begins with a segment about the USAAF 8th Air Force and the Royal Air Force campaigning with combined action. The film begins with shots of Free French Air Force pilots flying Douglas A-20 Havocs aka Bostons for the RAF, making a low-level run across the English Channel to bomb German factories. At 2:40, the shadow of an A-20 medium bomber skims the hedgerows. At 2:55, heavy bombers are shown over Germany, including Superfortresses and Liberators. At 3:19, captured German films show destroyed Allied aircraft and other wreckage, including a B-17 that made a forced landing in a field. At 4:18, German workers are shown salvaging aluminum and other parts for recycling and re-use as scrap metal for the German war effort. At 4:54, heavy bombers strike another German city. At 5:00, scenes from the Pacific, showing Cape Gloucester and the 7th Marines engaged in a tough battle against Japanese forces. At 6:00, Marines march through the mud. At 6:21, shell shocked Marines with a thousand mile stare look at the cameraman, a clear sign of PTSD. The film ends with words from General Eisenhower at 7:04, emphasizes the cost of war on men and equipment. Produced by the Signal Corps in 1944. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
