The film opens with a housewife, Claire, drying dishes in a kitchen (0:37) while her daughter, Sue, talks on the phone in the background. Sue says her friend will be coming over and her mother reprimands her for not doing the dishes. Sue says her mother is jumpy. John, Claire’s husband, comes in wearing a suit (1:46) and asks if his wife is ready before they go to the Burtons. John says Claire drinks too much. When John leaves, Claire pours herself some vodka and drinks it; she is startled when her daughter comes in to iron a skirt (3:19). Sue mentions that she tried spiked punch at a party with friends; her mother is angry that she drank. Claire pours the rest of her drink down the drain (4:17). At the Burtons’ house, Mr. Burton, wearing a suit and tie, prepares cocktails in martini glasses on a tray (4:31). Mr. Burton offers Didi, a young woman, a drink and she refuses, saying she doesn’t drink (5:10). He urges her to try. Claire also refuses a drink; John tells her, “One drink’s not going to hurt.” Mr. Burton hands Didi an alcoholic drink that tastes like lemonade. Didi plays her violin (6:20); after she finishes, Mr. Burton urges her to try a sip of his cocktail. Claire and John agree to take Didi home (7:48). An ambulance with sirens on turns down a street lit with street lamps (8:07); the crushed front bumper of a car is shown; orderlies load a stretcher into an ambulance. Later, Claire and John sit on their couch; John, with a bandaid on his chin, explains that he couldn’t react in time to avoid the accident and is sorry about Didi’s arm. Claire says he only had a few drinks, but the other driver was drunk. WABX radio comes on (9:31); John goes to turn it off; he sees Sue slumped over at the table surrounded by alcohol bottles (9:49). She explains a boy from her class came over and they drank. Her parents try to talk to her about drinking; she gets belligerent and storms off. The radio comes on playing “Midnight Musical Moods;” an advertisement for Pale Golden Brew beer, described as “a happy way of life, a symbol of good living, and the mark of distinction” follows (11:13). The camera zooms in on John’s face, looking distressed; he sits next to Claire on the couch (13:09). Sue comes stumbling out of her room. John and Claire talk about the dangers of alcohol; the film ends with John saying, “It looks like we only have one choice, Claire. If we have any sense at all, we certainly ought to know what we have to do now.” Broadman Films was based in Nashville, Tennessee, and came about as the result of outreach efforts by the Southern Baptist Church (SBC). SBC incorporated Broadman Films as a distributor, and worked with Family Films, a company based in Hollywood, to produce a series of films that would spread the gospel. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
