The Joe Barton in question was a North American Aviation test pilot who did extensive work with the P-51, including flying the lightweight XP-51G prototype on August 9, 1944. (Barton sadly perished in a B-25 accident in 1946). The film was apparently shot at Muroc AFB (later Edwards) and likely dates to 1943-44. At 1:53 some of the famous hazards of Muroc are shown in the form of rough, dirt roads. The P-51B Mustang shown in the film was equipped with the Packard built Rolls Royce Merlin 61, V-1650-3. The P-51B also was capable of hauling increased loads to 1,000 lbs under each wing, and no more nose mounted guns (no room with the Merlin) and a redesigned belly scoop.
