It likely dates to 1970. TG was founded in 1968 by champion-winning owner Terry Godsall (thus the TG) and veteran racecar driver Jerry Titus. Titus, who became widely known as "Mr. Trans Am", won a class victory and placed third overall at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1969, but the following year he died after a bad accident at Milwaukee. GM's Pontiac division originally provided the TG Team with five Firebirds for competition, including Pontiac's original silver Trans Am. The cars shown here are #73 driven by John Cordt and #79 driven by David Hobbs. The team's success was limited however as a result of the car's unreliable engine. The Trans Am is the Firebird's “big brother,” essentially the same car but with better performance options, a more powerful engine, and more high-end interior options. But although there are numerous differences between the two, their convertible tops are interchangeable.
