<description>Directed by Dr. Futer, "Man Against Everest" shows the 1952 Swiss Mount Everest expedition led by Edouard Wyss-Dunant. His team including Raymond Lambert and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay reached a height of about 8,595 metres (28,199 ft) on the southeast ridge, setting a new climbing altitude record, opening up a new route to Mount Everest and paving the way for further successes by other expeditions. In 1952, a Swiss expedition set out from Kathmandu, Nepal, to attempt the first ascent of Mount Everest from the south, carrying five tons of equipment. After a grueling 175-mile trek through rugged terrain, the climbers established a base camp 2.5 miles below the summit. With only 22 Sherpas continuing alongside them, they navigated the treacherous Icefall and ascended the 4,000-foot Lhotse face to reach the South Col ridge. As monsoon winds and freezing conditions closed in, the team made a final push toward the summit, battling exhaustion, brutal cold, and high-altitude challenges. Despite reaching over 28,000 feet—the highest point any human had reached—they were forced to turn back just 900 feet from the top due to a lack of oxygen and strength. Though the expedition failed to summit, it paved the way for future success, laying the groundwork for Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary’s historic climb the following year. 0:00 – The expedition begins in Kathmandu, Nepal, a city rarely visited by Westerners, where five tons of climbing equipment has arrived for an attempt to scale Mount Everest. 0:55 – From Kathmandu, the team embarks on a 175-mile uphill trek on foot to reach the Everest foothills. 1:17 – Previous expeditions since 1921 failed from the north via Tibet; this attempt will be the first from the south through Nepal. 1:40 – For three weeks, the expedition treks through remote terrain, drawing curious locals at each temporary camp. 2:23 – The team pays off over 300 porters, who now return home, while 22 expert Sherpas continue with the climbers toward Everest. 2:56 – At the base of Everest, 2.5 miles below the summit, the main base camp is established. Progress from here is slow and steep. 3:24 – The route ahead leads through the dangerous Icefall, a shifting field of ice and crevasses that once halted a previous attempt. 3:53 – A massive crevasse blocks the path; climbers descend and scale the far side to continue. 4:11 – With a bridgehead secured, supplies and personnel cross safely, enabling forward movement of supply camps. 4:34 – The hardest phase begins: climbing the 4,000-foot face of Lhotse, Everest’s neighboring peak, to reach the South Col ridge. 5:24 – While a critical climb up Lhotse is underway, others at camp prepare for the final push to Everest’s summit. 5:53 – The South Col is reached, but time is running out as monsoon winds and freezing cold begin to set in. 6:09 – Oxygen equipment is checked thoroughly—failure could mean death during the summit attempt. 6:27 – The monsoon arrives. It's now or never for a final summit push. 6:43 – The climbers push upward, battling extreme cold, exhaustion, altitude, and violent winds. 7:30 – Hurricane-force monsoon winds create an impassable barrier on the South Ridge. The team can go no farther. 7:50 – They reach over 28,000 feet—higher than any man before—but are still 900 feet from the summit. 8:08 – Time, oxygen, and strength have run out. The climbers are forced to turn back just short of their goal. 8:27 – Though the 1952 Swiss attempt fails, it paves the way for future success. 8:33 – Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary will later achieve the summit, standing atop the world.
