This 1948 travelogue about New York City is part of Pan American Airways “Wings to…” series, directed and photographed by Charles Beeland. The film opens with a long advertisement for Pan Am. Clipper ships are contrasted to close-ups of these Boeing 377-10-26 Pan Am Jet Clipper: Golden Fleece, Mayflower, Hotspur, and Invincible, with world routes graphically mapped (:28-2:52). The skyline is seen as the airplane approaches and lands at New York Airport. Passengers in 1948 clothing and luggage deplane. Cargo carts pass at the international terminal (2:54-5:18). A valet carries a suitcase to a taxi cab, which drives past the Manhattan skyline and down Park Avenue. A doorman carries the suitcase (5:20-7:04). A sightseeing plane offers views of Rockefeller Center, and RCA observation deck. The Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, and skyscrapers are panned from the ground up (7:06-8:56). The streets are full of pedestrians and 1940s cars at Greely Square, Broadway at 6th, and Fifth Avenue (9:00-10:19). The Manhattan 3rd Avenue L elevated train is shown (10:20-11:25). Manhattan municipal buildings tower over City Hall Park (11:26-11:55). The signs for Wall Street and Nassau Street are shown. The Sub-Treasury Building has a George Washington statue (11:56-12:24). Shown are the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas, St. Mark’s in the Bowery, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Temple Emmanuel, and Riverside Church (12:43-13:11). The Statue of Liberty has visitors waving from her crown, overlooking Central Park (13:16-13:55). A chimpanzee rides a tricycle. The sea lions are fed. A boy squats to feed pigeons. Boys launch a small sailboat (14:03-15:17). The Brooklyn Bridge and cloverleaf highways are seen from the air. 1948 cars drive by (15:32-16:40). Two-story houses have manicured lawns and flowers (16:49-17:03). The camera flies over Westchester Country Club. Two couples with caddies golf (17:04-17:29). Sailboats dot the water (17:35-18:12). Tennis is played at the Westside Tennis Club at Forest Hill courts. A crowd watches a match (18:13-18:55). Yankee Stadium is shown (18:57-19:17). The stands are crowded for college football, where a touchdown is shown (19:19-20:03). Belmont Park is shown from the air. The outside white staircases lead to the clubhouse. The gates open for the Belmont Stakes horse race (20:05-21:12). Skyscrapers tower over historic buildings with gas street lamps on MacDougal Alley in Greenwich Village, and its row houses (21:13-21:57). An outdoor art show has paintings and patrons. An artist sketches a woman (21:59-22:39). The lights of Times Square come on. Moving neon advertisements include Kinsey Blended Whiskey, Pepsi-Cola, Ruppert Beer, Planters Peanuts, Camel Cigarettes, Schaefer Beer, the movies “Fun and Fancy Free”, “Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, “Finian’s Rainbow”,  “The Heiress”, “Life with Father”, “Harvey”, and “Command Decision” (22:40-24:50). Neon restaurant lights include Diamond Horseshoe, Broadway Bar, Lindy’s, Tango Palace, Latin Quarter, Harem, Glass Hat, China Doll, and Versailles. Times Square twinkles (24:52-25:22). A stewardess brings drinks to passengers playing cards at a table and full meals to women in 1948 clothing. A steward pulls down a sleeping berth. A woman brushes her hair in one. Two women share another one (25:34-27:25). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
