NASA APOLLO PROGRAM MISSION CONTROL OVERVIEW & COMPUTER SYSTEMS 78134

Made during the Apollo Program, this NASA film shows mission control in Houston, Texas. Flight controllers are seen in the film, including Chris Kraft. Also shown in the film are the tracking centers and launch vehicle monitors at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama, and the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. Mission support computers, including an IBM 100, are seen in the form of three digital computers at the 2:31 mark. This computing complex, one of the world's largest at the time, is quite stunning. Over 3,500 IBM employees were involved. The Goddard Space Flight Center used IBM System/360 Model 75s for communications across Nasa and the spacecraft. IBM Huntsville designed and programmed the Saturn rocket instrument unit, while the Saturn launch computer at the Kennedy Space Center was operated by IBM. An IBM System/360 Model 75 was also used at Nasa's Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston. This computer was used by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to calculate lift-off data required to launch the Lunar Module off the Moon's surface and enable it to rendezvous with Command Module pilot Michael Collins for the flight back to Earth. At the time, IBM described the 6Mbyte programs it developed, to monitor the spacecrafts' environmental and astronauts' biomedical data, as the most complex software ever written. Even the simplest software today would far exceed the technical constraints the Apollo team worked under. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. We collect, scan and preserve 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have films you'd like to have scanned or donate to Periscope Film, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us via the link below. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD and 2k.
