Coronet Films was a major educational film producer popular during the 1940’s through to the 1980’s. Documentary shorts were created on 16-millimeter film for use in public schools. The company switched to VHS in the late 1970’s. “Drugs and Medicine What They Do” briefly touches upon a variety of medicinal drugs such as anesthesia, Novocain, aspirin, insulin and newly manufactured depressants and stimulants. It begins with a discussion on the body’s complex systems and how they automatically operate to keep the human body healthy. Medicinal drugs are introduced when such systems are compromised or injured. The film includes footage of administration of the polio vaccine, Novocain and anesthesia. Narration stresses the need for supervision from medical professionals as well as the need to adhere to proper dosing. The final segment of the film touches on the effect of stimulants and depressants on the brain as well as the mass production of these new drugs. 00:00 Film opens with the Coronet logo (:30) and the title screen (:34). The educational collaborator for this feature was Donald J. Wolk (:40); Professor of Psychology of the University of Bridgeport. Wolk helped to write “Drugs and Youth” in 1971. The opening segment shows youth in physical education class performing activities the healthy body can normally conduct with ease (:49). A boy gets injured (1:17) and is treated with antiseptics. A segment explains how antibiotics such as penicillin and streptomycin work over images of test slides (2:16). Physicians peer through the microscope (2:27). A section explains the administration of antigens such as the polio vaccine (2:44). The vaccine is kept refrigerated (3:13). Images of the human body in diagram lead to a discussion on various systems within the body and how they require specific chemicals. The pancreas (3:25) calls for insulin. A small bottle of insulin is pictured (3:34). Lack of insulin in the body leads to diabetes (3:34). The process of taking insulin follows (3:46). Youth play basketball (4:18). A young girl exhibits symptoms of hay fever (4:41). She takes antihistamines from the medicine cabinet (5:13) as the drug and it’s affected impact on the body are relayed. Aspirin and it’s effect follow (5:42). Local anesthesia such as Novocaine (6:08) are administered by a dentist. A diagram of the head shows how the drug operates (6:31). A girl touches her numbed face following administration (6:37). Spinal anesthetic drugs (6:52) are administered to shut off nerve responses to pain over the entire body. A woman receives mask induction of anesthesia prior to surgery (7:07). The film turns to the effect of stimulants and antidepressants on the central nervous system (7:30). A patient is delivered prescriptions by a nurse (8:05); proper dosing is stressed. Another patient receives administration intravenously (8:58). The final section touches upon newly produced drugs for fighting cancer, epilepsy, and various mental illnesses (9:07). Machines mass produce pills (9:20). A pharmacist scoops a small sample (9:31). A final scene shows a husband delivering flowers for his wife in the hospital (9:40). Viewers are left with the notion that while not all require these medicinal drugs, some do and proper usage must be maintained. The film concludes with the final credit screen (10:13). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
