Truman learned to fly in a Swallow biplane at age 18. Visible in these movies are a number of interesting aircraft including a Ford Trimotor and a Travelair Model R "Mystery Ship." Based on the solid blue color scheme this is very likely woman pilot Florence "Pancho" Barnes' aircraft, which she flew in Union Oil livery. The location of the airport shown here is unknown, but it's possibly it was Clover Field in Los Angeles circa 1930. In that year Barnes attempted to fly the Mystery Ship in the women's air race known as the Powder Puff Derby; but race officials would not allow such a powerful aircraft to compete. The Type R "Mystery Ships" were a series of wire-braced, low-wing racing airplanes built by the Travel Air company in the late 1920s and early 1930s. They were so called, because the first three aircraft of the series (R614K, R613K, B11D) were built entirely in secrecy. In total, five Type Rs were built and flown by some of the most notable flyers of the day, including Jimmy Doolittle, Doug Davis, Frank Hawks, and Pancho Barnes, not only in races but also at air shows across the United States, and most notably, by Hawks in Europe. Barnes' aircraft is the only one to survive, and is now located in the U.K. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA.
