The film likely dates to 1940 when Helm served aboard the schooner Bear, which was Admiral Richard E. Byrd's flagship during his Antarctic expedition. Byrd is seen at 1:35 on deck with his dog. At 2:15 the Straights of Magellan are seen. At 9:12 a "nomad Indian" visits the ship at anchor. At 10:57 the ship enters the Narrows, the most dangerous part of the passage. At 12:40 the Bear heads out to sea, having transited the passage. Ennis C. "Tex" Helm worked for the Daily Oklahoman as a photographer and once set a world's record by photographing Carlsbad Caverns National Park with 2,400 flashbulbs, died Sunday at his New Mexico home at the age of 79. In the early 1930s, the news photographer's Oklahoma experience ranged from chasing Bonnie and Clyde through the southwest to taking shots of early space flight tests for the U.S. government. Later, Helm moved to New York and Chicago and was credited with being the second newsman on the scene of the infamous St. Valentine's Day massacre. His career expanded into newsreels, a move that took him around the world seven times and included him on the expeditions of Erle Stanley Gardner and Adm. Richard Byrd. The Strait of Magellan (Spanish: Estrecho de Magallanes), also called the Straits of Magellan, is a navigable sea route in southern Chile separating mainland South America to the north and Tierra del Fuego to the south. The strait is the most important natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The route is considered difficult to navigate due to frequent narrows and unpredictable winds and currents. Maritime piloting is now compulsory. The strait is shorter and more sheltered than the Drake Passage, the often stormy open sea route around Cape Horn. Along with the narrow and sometimes treacherous Beagle Channel and the seasonal and historically treacherous North West Passage, these were the only sea routes between the Atlantic and Pacific until the construction of the Panama Canal.
