A soldier known as Julian leaps from the back of an empty truck (5:52). His letter, written from the war front appears (5:58). Faces of the locals pass before the screen (7:36). Julian leads the village boys in a drill (7:46). Freshly armed and black jacketed troops march with rifle butts (8:38). 'Shock battalion' (9:08) is mentioned, often these ill equipped forces with little training experienced intense punishment upon capture by the highly trained fascist forces. Lovers part (9:26) as trucks haul off troops for battle. Walls appear riddled with cannon holes (10:11). Civilians run through streets (10:18), sirens ring out as ambulances arrive to collect the dead (10:20). Combat erupts and glass cracks (10:37). Ambulances scream in (10:47). Civilians sprint across open ground (10:54). Youth sort through the rubble (11:18) for shell fragments. Black smoke runs from a building hit (11:23). Two boys lay flat on the ground struck by a shell (11:30). The boys lay face down (11:41), glass from shattered windows sprinkled about. Fighter planes buzz, hunting for targets (12:01). A woman slips from her home (13:05), her children peer through the window. Wounded and mangled dead lay on their backs (13:28). Survivors look over the bodies (13:36). Infantry men and assault forces (20:22) drive forward. Shells scream (21:20). Small groups cross open lands (21:49). Wounded are carted on litter next to the convoy (22:15). Medics tend to them (22:39). A wounded soldier smiles from his back (23:16). The counter attack is noted to have been successful as the roadway opens and the bridge is captured (24:29). Water pushes through the dirt canal (25:05). Militia men are shown to be hardened soldiers from the battle (25:50). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
