One in a series of Army Navy Screen Magazines produced during WWII for the troops and war workers, #48 features the short British film "V-1" about Hitler's robot bombs, and "Command Performance", a wonderful war bond film featuring Bob Hope, June Allyson, Jerry Colonna and Ethel Smith. The V-1 flying bomb, also known as the Buzz Bomb or Doodlebug, was an early pulse-jet-powered predecessor of the cruise missile. The V-1 was developed at Peenemünde Airfield by the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. During initial development it was known by the codename "Cherry Stone". The first of the so-called Vergeltungswaffen series designed for terror bombing of London, the V-1 was fired from "ski" launch sites along the French (Pas-de-Calais) and Dutch coasts. The first V-1 was launched at London on June 13, 1944, one week after (and prompted by) the successful Allied landing in Europe. At its peak, more than one hundred V-1s a day were fired at southeast England, 9,521 in total. The tone then shifts to light-hearted entertainment as Command Performance USA begins, hosted by Bob Hope with June Allyson and Gloria DeHaven. They sing "A Love Like Ours" from the movie Two Girls and a Sailor (1944). Then Jerry Colonna shows up and he and Bob Hope perform more comedy. Next, Ethel Smith plays her hit "Tico Tico" on the organ, and to finish things off, Frances Langford sings Gershwin's "Embraceable You." 0:00 Nazi propaganda claims London has been devastated by the new German weapon, the V-1 flying bomb, but the city continues to endure. 1:00 Graphic depiction of how V-1 attacks disrupted everyday life—school, transit, restaurants, hospitals, and churches—all turned into sites of destruction. 2:02 Despite heavy losses—thousands of lives and buildings—Londoners continue to work and help one another, including GIs and local rescue crews. 3:01 The British military retaliates: gunners and spotters on the south coast bring down many V-1 bombs. 3:51 Other defense tactics include barrage balloons and fighter pilots using Tempests, Mustangs, and Spitfires to destroy thousands more bombs. 4:25 Despite defenses, some bombs get through, causing anxiety and danger in towns and cities across England. 5:19 Spotters and civilians do their best to detect incoming bombs, often with little warning. Germans hoped the bombing would break British morale. Instead, it strengthened resolve, especially after a bomb hit a chapel housing soldiers’ families. 6:08 Americans, too, suffered in London from these bombings, including WACs. Later, V-1s were used against U.S. forces in Belgium and Luxembourg. 6:46 A warning about future wars: long-range, button-activated destruction from continents away. The message: only peace can prevent this. 7:12 A call to remember global suffering and work for lasting peace so future generations don’t face similar horrors. 8:27 Transition to Command Performance USA entertainment show. Bob Hope returns from the South Pacific to host. 9:04 Hope delivers comedic monologue about travel, Hollywood, and Bing Crosby's trip to London. 10:04 June Allyson and Gloria DeHaven perform a romantic musical number. 12:01 Professor Colonna joins with comedic banter, travel jokes, and a message on financial planning for post-war life. 13:54 Ethel Smith performs a high-energy organ number, “Tico Tico.” 16:14 Frances Langford sings the ballad “Embraceable You” to close out the entertainment portion. 18:13 Bob Hope signs off with gratitude, encouraging troops to keep sending requests and assuring them their morale means everything to the performers.
