<description>This black and white film, entitled “English Children (Life in the City),'' was produced by Encyclopedia Britannica Films, Inc. (EB Films). This 1949 film is a collaboration with Harold S. Kemp of Harvard University and is educational and observational in nature. The production opens at 0:31 with a pleasant narration and footage of English school children participating in recreational activities outside a schoolhouse in the summer. Boys and girls playing marbles and jumping rope outdoors during afternoon school recess is depicted (0:40-1:12). The film goes on to describe the classroom activities for students in London city schools, from drawing to learning new subjects and other such wholesome endeavors. After-school activities are described for all ages of English youth, emphasizing sports and play time (1:50-2:38). The camera pans across a mid-level aerial view of York, an old city in the north of England (3:31-3:46). At 3:47, the narrator describes the Towers of York Minster while the camera stops to focus on a shot of the tower buildings. An impressive example of Medieval architectural prowess, the set of towers was constructed in the 15th century. At 4:12 we are introduced to a typical English family called the Watkins, with the film showing the work and home life of each member. An example of characteristic British food is presented on the Watkins family dinner table (5:12-5:15). The daily life of this archetypal English family is further captured with footage of tea time, family members listening to the BBC sports news program on radio, and casual conversations between mother, father and the children. In a typical English summer, Tommy Watkins and his friends enjoy outdoor games like marbles, while his sister Joan and her friends play their own games. At school, Tommy is drawing pictures of steamships he’s seen by the seaside. After school, Tommy watches his brother Frank play cricket, cheering him on despite Frank getting out. Joan and her mother go shopping for apples, then the family walks along the historic city walls of York before meeting their father, who is an engine driver. At home, Mrs. Watkins prepares tea, and the family listens to the wireless before discussing an upcoming seaside holiday. On a gray day, they eagerly catch a train to the coast, where they explore the harbor and fishing boats. They then climb to Grandmother’s cozy cottage on the cliffs, warmly welcomed by their grandparents, and settle in for a restful and pleasant holiday. 0:00 – Boys like Tommy Watkins play marbles outside during summer playtime, while girls have their own games. 1:00 – Inside the school, Tommy’s class is drawing pictures, including a steamship Tommy imagines from his seaside visits. 1:43 – After school, Tommy watches his brother Frank playing cricket; Frank scores runs but eventually gets out. 2:39 – Joan and her mother go shopping for apples at the grocer’s, paying with shillings and pennies. 3:11 – The family walks along the old city walls of York, looking out over the city and its cathedral before meeting their father at the train station. 4:10 – Mr. Watkins arrives from Scotland as an engine driver; the family lives on a pleasant street with flower gardens. 4:36 – Mrs. Watkins prepares tea and snacks in the kitchen, setting the table for their 6 o’clock tea time. 5:21 – The family listens to a sports report on the wireless as they enjoy their meal. 5:48 – The family discusses upcoming seaside holidays and preparing to take their dog, Spot, along. 6:33 – On a gray day, the family eagerly waits at the station for their seaside train. 7:10 – Tommy boards the train and finds a compartment; the train passes through the Yorkshire countryside. 8:30 – They arrive at the seaside harbor, where the boys explore fishing boats and meet fishermen mending nets. 9:16 – The family climbs narrow streets and winding steps up to the cliffs to reach Grandmother’s cottage. 10:07 – They arrive at the cozy cottage and are warmly welcomed by Grandmother and Grandfather. 10:30 – The family settles around the fire for a rest and chat, looking forward to a pleasant holiday. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
