Steam locomotive #375 is shown assembling a freight train. This is a class C-25 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type, steam locomotive built in 1903 the Baldwin Locomotive Works and the only C-25 ever built. It was scrapped about two years after this film was shot in 1949. At (1:31) engine #475 is shown with a long passenger train behind it. This is a K-28 class 2-8-2 "Mikado" type narrow gauge steam locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). It remains in service today with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (D&SNG) in Durango, Colorado. Starting at (2:30) are images shot from the train. At (4:27) a Rio Grande work train complete with crew bunk car and snowplow, shown on a siding. One of the cars is marked "Rotary OM" which was affiliated with one of two Leslie snowplows. There were four snowplows -- OM, ON, OO and OY -- which were stationed so they could rapidly be brought to the lines most likely to be blocked by snow during winter. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (reporting mark DRGW), often shortened to Rio Grande, D&RG or D&RGW, formerly the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, was an American Class I railroad company. The railroad started as a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow-gauge line running south from Denver, Colorado, in 1870. It served mainly as a transcontinental bridge line between Denver and Salt Lake City, Utah. The Rio Grande was also a major origin of coal and mineral traffic. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
