This documentary-style segment explores the life cycle of crayfish, focusing on the harsh realities hidden beneath the beauty of spring. While nature appears abundant and flourishing, the journey from birth to adulthood is perilous. Crayfish hatch vulnerable and defenseless, becoming easy prey for predators. As they grow, they must repeatedly shed their protective exoskeletons—a risky and often fatal process. Those that survive face continual threats, including predators and environmental hazards. Eventually, they reach adulthood and seek to reproduce, but even this instinct-driven quest involves danger, such as disorienting journeys over land. The film highlights the constant struggle for survival in the natural world, where life and death are closely intertwined. 0:00 Main titles – Spring begins as Earth turns toward the sun; life reawakens in soil and water. 0:45 – Despite the beauty, spring conceals a harsh struggle for survival in nature. 1:01 – Crayfish embryos are safe within egg sacs attached to the mother. 1:17 – Upon release, the young crayfish face immediate dangers. 1:30 – Vulnerable baby crayfish are easy prey for predators. 1:46 – They develop a protective exoskeleton, but it must be shed to grow. 2:10 – Finding food exposes them to further danger. 2:42 – Even a floating piece of wood can pose a deadly threat. 3:12 – After a year, crayfish outgrow most predators, but molting remains dangerous. 4:20 – Survivors emerge exhausted and vulnerable after molting. 4:47 – Some crayfish die trying to shed their skeletons. 5:03 – Nature’s failures feed its scavengers, continuing the cycle. 5:41 – Adults who survive are ready to reproduce. 6:03 – Males leave their habitat in search of mates, driven by instinct. 6:19 – The overland journey is difficult and confusing for the crayfish. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
