The newsreel is not dated but likely released in 1946. 00:00 Title screen is superimposed over the Palace of Westminster and Thames River (:12). Close shots of London and Big Ben (:18) followed by Windsor Castle in Berkshire (:22 and :28). King George VI (:35) stands in front of naval guns (:35). "British Soldiers in Palestine" shows some of the last days of the Palestinian Mandate, which lasted from the 1920’s to 1948. The newsreel's focus is on the intervention of British Civil forces in Jerusalem against the young militant Haganah and Irgun. (The Irgun, officially the National Military Organization in the Land of Israel, was a Zionist paramilitary organization that operated in Mandatory Palestine between 1931 and 1948. It was an offshoot of the older and larger Jewish paramilitary organization Haganah.) The Tower of David; aka the Citadel stands near the Jaffa Gate entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem (:46). Jaffa Gate (:48) and Tegart’s Wall follow (:52). British soldiers flood Vickers Medium Mark II tanks (1:00) leaving base camp (1:10), one features the cockney slang term ‘Ulster’. Foot soldiers march from base camp (1:14). A soldier on guard stalks an iron gate in Haifa (1:21). Another grips a .303 Bren light machine gun (1:29). British soldiers stop and search pedestrians (1:37) and check identification cards near Jerusalem’s B-Zone (1:42). The Central Post Office building off Jaffa Street in Jerusalem appears behind barbed wire (1:59). British grab plantains from a fruit cart (2:08). The Haganah look over the country side (2:19). British military might (2:25) includes a Bren gun carrier (2:36), army Jeeps (2:38) and an air show attended by a large crowd (2:45). A segment commemorates the modified Lancaster bomber named “Aries” as it became the first British aircraft to fly around the world. Lancaster PD328, named Aries, was a very special machine. Built as a standard Mark I bomber, it had completed a round-the-world flight in 1944 as part of RAF preparations to deploy heavy bombers to the Pacific theatre once Germany had been defeated. Here it lands in Laverton, Australia (3:11). Flight crew members get photographed (3:23). The Victory Anniversary in Malaysia follows in Kuala Lumpur (3:31) featuring members of volunteer forces receiving medals (3:38) outside of the Royal Selangor Club; a social club for the elite founded in 1884 by the British (3:40). Chin Peng appears (355). A parade flanked by British Union Jack flags runs down Malaya Raffles Square Street (4:21) accompanied by the Ceremony of the Chinese dragon (421). "Mont Ends US Visit". General Dwight Eisenhower (4:38) and Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery had a notoriously rocky relationship. Eisenhower boards a USAAF C-54 (4:48). They shake hands on the plane's stair case (4:57). A WWII Churchill Bridge Laying Tank (5:25), the Corps of the Royal Engineers (5:43) and a vintage 3 Ton Bakery Oven Trailer are pictured (5:50). "Carcase City". The newsreel visits post-war Berlin with its streets of shattered buildings and ruins (5:57). Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church (6:03) and other scenes of reconstruction (6:10-6:18). The Invalidenfriedhof Cemetery (6:29), the Soviet War Memorial Tiergarten (6:37), Piccadilly Bar (7:03) the Marmorhaus; an old cinema (7:13) off Kurfurstendamm and Haus Vaterland (7:35) follow. The Pendleton Roundup hosted in Oregon (7:50) concludes the film. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
