<description>Hap Headlough worked on the Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle programs. He was an engineer as well as an Apollo Test Conductor. He was there when Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, Edward H. White, and Roger B. Chaffee lost their lives in a flash fire aboard their Apollo 1 spacecraft during a ground test on the launch pad. While discussing the accident, the recollections bring back emotions to the point that he had to take a break during the interview. As the Space Shuttle Program wound up, Hap had concerns that lessons learned from Apollo were offered but not fully accepted and applied to the Shuttle program by new contractor management. He discusses that frustrating situation. Employment... Hap says that at the end of 1963 or early 1964 he went to work for McDonnell Aircraft in the Guidance &amp; Navigation Group working on the Gemini program. Next he worked for North American Aviation (became Rockwell International) on the Apollo program. He was a Flight Controls Engineer then a Test Conductor. After working Spacelab, In 1967 he moved to California to work on Space Shuttle Design Integration. An ORIGINAL production of The American Space Museum, Titusville, FL. Part of our original 2001 "Space Workers Oral History" Project. Interview by Dr. Lori C. Walters on 3/8/2002 in Titusville, FL. Sorry this video is only 480p definition but the audio is the important part.
