<description>“The Chemistry of Fire” is a circa 1944 black-and-white United States Navy film that informs sailors how to properly put out. It immediately starts with a brief explanation that fuel needs both oxygen and ignition temperature to burn (mark 00:10) with a “burning graphic” illustrating the point before explaining that extinguishing fire involves cutting off the oxygen supply or decreasing the temperature. Several examples of the “smothering” method are shown accompanied by the narrator’s explanation. The importance of fire extinguishers, especially onboard a ship, is illustrated at mark 01:30, while extinguishing oil fires is covered starting at mark 02:18, including those in fire rooms or bilges. The viewer learns of steam-smothering systems installed onboard some vessels starting at mark 05:32 before the film addresses temperature-reduction methods beginning at mark 07:50 as we watch footage of those methods as they’re explained. By mark 12:25, the viewer learns successful cooling measures for fires involving powder or ammunition. Dramatic footage begins at mark 13:49 as sailors extinguish a ship fire caused by an enemy attack. Even those fires, the narrator reminds us, can be controlled and extinguished, as we watch sailors onboard an aircraft carrier fighting a blaze. The film is recapped starting at mark 14:45 before drawing to a close. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD and 2k.
