The film opens with images of statues of Civil War soldiers, a quote from Marquis de Lafayette (“As soon as I heard of American independence, my heart was enlisted.” ), Marine Corporal Michael Wynn, elderly Vietnamese man and children bow to camera, protestors alight, a bandolier filled with bullets, and a child smoking. 02:57 Vice President Hubert Humphrey talks about peace. Senator John Foster Dulles examines a world globe. President Lyndon Johnson gives a speech on the values of being American. 04:04 British troops marching in Asia circa 1930. Rickshaw drivers deliver passengers to a sidewalk cafe. 05:33 Journalist Philippe Devillers and French scholar Paul Mus talk about the suppression of political activity and how Ho Chi Minh has the feel of his people. 07:45 French journalist Jean Lacouture reports from the spot where Ho Chi Minh edited le Paria newspaper in the 1920s. 09:22 Kenneth P. Landon of the State Department talks about Franklin D. Roosevelt’s adamant remarks that he wants no French returned to Indochina. Senator Thurston B. Morton talks about Ho Chi Minh being considered by his people as the George Washington of Vietnam. Footage of Japanese occupied Vietnam in the 1940s. Various Japanese soldiers interact with locals, archive footage of peasant soldiers led by Ho Chi Minh. 10:58 Landon talks about British General Douglas Gracey accepting Japanese 1945 surrender in Vietnam. Footage of British troops arriving in Vietnam turning over their weapons to the French. 11:52 Paul Mus decries meeting Ho Chi Minh at the end of 1945 as we see Ho Chi Minh boarding a British naval ship, and footage of Minh in the jungle with Vietnamese citizens. 13:11 Charlton Ogburn, Chief of Vietnam Desk for State Department in 1940s, remembers the French navy shelling Haiphong City in November 1946. 13:31 Mus reports Minh negotiating with him about trusting the West. 14:02 New York Times journalist David Halberstam talks about Vietnam divided as we see French Indochina war footage including arresting of Vietnamese, tanks, French Grumman F6F drops bombs, M3 AI halftrack rolls down a street, villages burn, Vietnamese elderly and children destitute on the street, 15:24 Secretary of Defense Charles Wilson discussed the equipment and technicians the US has sent to Indochina as we see footage of aircraft carriers with Grumman F8Fs. Trucks pulls F8F fighters through Vietnamese streets. 15:44 explains keeping the NAVAR plan to build up forces and training. as a C-47s and  C119 fly by and drop French paratroopers. French and Vietnamese ground troops on patrol, in various fire fights. M24 Chaffee tank fires. 17:04 Senator Thurston Ballard Morton on how US and French underestimated Vietnamese troops in 1954’s Battle of Dien Bien Phu as we see Ho Chi Minh and Vietnamese masterminds in discussion. 17:22 US Marine Colonel William Corson discusses the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. as we see Vietnamese troops moving artillery pieces through the jungle. 17:56 Archival footage of Senator John Foster Dulles giving public update on the battle as we see footage of the battle. Howitzer cannon fire as troops deploy, charge over fields, and paratroopers hit the ground. 18:42 Senator Morton recalls a meeting with Admiral Radford encouraging bringing US support to the French. 19:58 French journalist Jean Lacouture explaining why the French lost the Indochina war. 20:08  Senator Dulles announcing Dien Bien Phu has fallen and to honor the gallant defenders as we see footage of Vietnamese soldiers celebrating their victory. A flag reads, “Determined to Win.” French and native captured forces are rounded up. Victorious soldiers climb on destroyed tanks and planes. Cemeteries. Tombs of Francis Garnier, Henri Riviere, French officers salute fallen comrades, coffins are loaded onto ships. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
