ESSO is the trading name of the major oil brand Exxon Mobil. Through a science fiction narrative of a man communicating with a computer the film explores how man and technology were working together in order to enhance aspects of hydrocarbon fuels and oil exploration. It shows how service stations were optimized for better sales and customer service. Electronic sales were becoming normal for American consumers. It also shows the process of searching for oil using seismic data interpretation. It tours testing sites in Abingdon as they work to provide greater fuel efficiency and to reduce engine wear. Underwater production systems such as the UMC showcase remote controlled robots handling maintenance making operations in deep waters safer. The E-Tec logo appears (:23). Green rolling hills appear as a man rushes for a lone computer desktop at the top (:39). Man and computer discuss relations between humans and technology (1:36). The pair travel to an Esso service station in London (2:32). The transition from cash to credit is discussed (3:30). This enabled automated gas deliveries (3:38). An oil tank arrives for refueling (3:57). The computer explains the setup of the service station (4:02). Advances in drilling for oil in the sea is explored (4:51). A diagram shows the layers of sediments below the water (5:07). The process of surveying for oil is explained using the ISIS system (5:14). Data is analyzed (5:39) and computers interpret the data (5:42). Geo physicists access data and locate new and existing sites for drilling (6:08). The facility in Abingdon, Oxford is explored (7:01). A simulator test follows (7:26). Other tests check fuels and lubricants (7:45). Laboratory technicians explore the bond between robots and computers (9:03). The sea floor is scanned for new sources of oil (10:07). A giant control valve tips into the water (10:33). The underwater manifold center operates as a connection point for satellite wells on the seabed (10:48). A demonstration follows of a 35 ton robot mechanic conducting robot maintenance (11:43). How these robots protect divers from danger is explored (12:06). The final segment of the film takes a look at environmental impacts (12:36). Aerial views pass over pipelines (12:34). Protections for the environment included burying the pipelines, investigations into producing less polluting carbon fuels (12:40). In an example of an accident during sea drilling (12:53) a stricken tanker and the resulting oil spill (12:59). Responsibilities between central and local governments (13:02) are explained. Computer technology enables easy tracking of the slick (13:33). The Esso logo appears on the computer screen (14:06). This film was produced for Esso UK by Wyvern Television (15:14). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
