This film explores the use of explosives in underground blasting operations, including the use of detonators and dynamite. The film re-enacts and analyzes a serious blasting accident. It also follows a blasting crew through the various stages of underground blasting, including preparation of a proper blast plan, while describing the specific safety practices that must be observed at each step -- drilling, loading, detonation, and post-blast examination. The film opens with a scenario of two miners, one in a drill car, and the other neglecting procedure and telling the driller to drill, causing an explosion (0:50 Graphic). (1:52), the narrator says that blasting accidents are caused by one or more violations of safety regulations. The four categories of safety procedures are described (2:46). The section on drilling starts (3:02). A blasting galvanometer is shown being used by a miner (3:49). A mining drill is shown drilling into the cave (5:06). (5:22), the next section on loading begins. An explosives loading cart (5:31). Bags of explosive material and boxes of electric blasting caps are shown being unloaded (6:24). The narrator states the maximum tolerable stray current (6:36). A miner is shown loading blasting holes, he is using a tamping pole, hole punch, and primer (6:50-7:05). (From 8:43-9:20), pneumatic loading is demonstrated. A miner using a blasting galvanometer and testing blasting lines (11:09). (At 12:00), the section on detonation begins. A miner is shown tying blasting wire onto a detonator (13:25). (Starting from 13:54), the next section on post-blast examination begins, with a discussion about misfires. A Wagner loader and Caterpillar material loading equipment are shown during the film's conclusion (15:32). A miner declares "Fire in the hole!" prior to firing the explosives using an electric detonator (16:17). The film ends (16:28).
