This 1943 black and white film installment of The Army-Navy Screen Magazine, a bi-weekly short film series shown to military personnel documents a Command Performance radio transcription recording of the Armed Forces Radio Network (AFRS) featuring Bob Hope, Betty Hutton, Lana Turner, and Judy Garland that was transmitted by shortwave radio to troops overseas during World War II (TRT: 12:45). Title card: Command Performance U.S.A. Strictly G.I.” The AFRS band plays a rousing fanfare. An announcer speaks at a radio microphone (0:10). Young women sort fan mail from enlisted men (0:37). An audio recording is mastered to a rotating vinyl disc by an engineer with headphones (0:48). Bob Hope takes the stage wearing a pinstripe suit. He jokes, “Crimea doesn’t pay” and says he’s getting the award of the “purple callous” (1:11). Hope introduces Betty Hutton, who takes the stage wearing black bows in her hair and speaks into a CBS radio microphone. Betty and Bob exchange lines (a splice occurs) (2:00). Betty Hutton performs “Murder, He Says” (2:42). Betty Hutton leaves the stage. Bob Hope introduces Lana Turner, fulfilling a written request to have her fry a steak on the air (5:05). Reading from a script, Lana Turner zings Hope. She calls, “Bring on the Porterhouse steak!” (5:58). G.I.’s in helmets emerge from the wings with a steak. Turner holds it up with a fork, then puts it on a griddle to sizzle. “Fellas, I wish I could cook a big steak for each and every one of you” (6:46). Bob Hope introduces “that lovely sweater girl” Judy Garland (7:45). Judy Garland appears, wearing a black sequined dress, and patiently sets Hope up for a gag about sweater girls (8:09). Judy Garland sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” (8:30). Garland in Closeup (9:20). Images of radio towers crossfade over one another. Titles: “Africa, Alaska, South Pacific, Europe, China, Middle East” over the radio towers (10:35). Judy Garland takes a bow and leaves the stage. Bob Hope sings a light comic number thanking the U.S. Armed Forces and Allies (11:13). A recording of the radio “transcription for troops” is put into a shipping box, “U.S. Gov’t Property, Must Go Thru, Urgent! Keep From Heat.” A label: “Fragile! From War Department, Radio Records” with a return address of 1421 North Western Ave., Los Angeles, California (12:18). Title card: “Army-Navy Screen Magazine, The End” (12:28). Installments of Army-Navy Screen Magazine generally included a newsreel and a “Private Snafu” cartoon. At least 50 such films were produced under the supervision of director Frank capra, of which this film was #20.
