Made at a time when almost all educational films were silent -- and in an era when few schools owned sound projectors -- it proved that sound films worked well in schools. "Bunny Rabbit" is considered (along with "Gray Squirrel" and "Snapping Turtle") one of the very first educational film to speak to the five and six year old child in his/her own language, without attempting to impart information directly. (Note: "Bunny Rabbit", though it was the first film distributed in the series, had been sent to the company in an advanced state. "Gray Squirrel" really was the first such film planned and executed by ERPI.) The script for the film was written by PhD psychologist Laura Krieger, and it was photographed by Lynwood Chace. The story follows Mrs. Grey Rabbit and her young family as they live in a cozy home hidden in the woods. Mrs. Grey Rabbit is very protective of her babies, especially Bunny, the most adventurous one. One day, Bunny ventures out in search of food, specifically lettuce, despite his mother's warnings about the dangers in the woods. After asking various animals for help, Bunny eventually makes his way to a farm where he encounters several challenges, including being shooed away by cows, chickens, and puppies. Finally, he discovers the lettuce in a greenhouse but is caught by the farmer. Despite being trapped in a dollhouse, Bunny manages to escape and returns home safely, where he is reunited with his mother. 00:00 The story begins with Mrs. Grey Rabbit’s home in the woods, where her babies, including Bunny Rabbit, are living. 1:01 - Mrs. Grey Rabbit watches over her young while they play, making sure they are safe from danger. 1:48 - Mrs. Grey Rabbit goes out for a meal, and Bunny is the first to venture out for adventure. 2:16 - Mrs. Grey Rabbit, along with her cousin White Rabbit, heads to the farm for a meal but is warned by a fox’s presence. 2:39 - Mrs. Grey Rabbit hides from the fox, who is searching for her but cannot enter her home. 3:46 - Time passes, and the young rabbits grow and become more independent. 4:02 - Mrs. Grey Rabbit feels it’s safe for her children to play outside, and Bunny is the first to venture off again. 4:45 - Bunny goes off in search of lettuce, asking various animals for help, including Mr. Frog, the Squirrel, and Mr. Turtle. 5:53 - Bunny reaches the farm and faces difficulty finding the lettuce, dealing with cows, chickens, and puppies, who all prevent him from eating. 6:57 - Bunny watches turkeys and pigeons but eventually finds his way to a greenhouse full of lettuce. 7:55 - Bunny is caught by the farmer while eating lettuce, and the farmer traps him in a dollhouse. 8:34 - Despite being trapped, Bunny is still hungry and tries the doll's food but decides to escape. 9:01 - Bunny successfully escapes and returns to the woods, finally reuniting with his mother, where they share a conversation. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD, 2k and 4k.
