<description>Army-Navy Screen Magazine, Issue No. 47 is a “pictorial report from all fronts from the armed force” and produced by the Signal Corps’ Army Pictorial Service in the 1940s under the supervision of director Frank Capra. The first segment of this issue is “Massachusetts Shore Leave,” which follows Walter Burke during his leave as he returns home to Marblehead, Massachusetts. The segment begins with a shot of bus 127 (00:40) traveling from Boston to Marblehead. After twenty months at sea, Walter and a shipmate step off the bus at Marblehead (01:17), and walk to Walter’s home. Walter’s family warmly greets the two men, as countless families have greeted returning sailors over the last three centuries. The film follows the Burkes as they go to church at St. Michael’s, chat with a local captain about the Cruiser of Marblehead, and sit down for the family Sunday dinner. Like many other residents of Marblehead, Walter’s father goes to work at the shipyard (06:42) to help build Navy ships. 35,000 men and women work in Marblehead’s shipyards building LSTs, launching three ships each week. Walter observes some men welding (07:36) steel sheets for the ships and the launching of a ship (08:11), LST number 959. The second segment is “Moscow Parade,” which shows Russian soldiers marching German prisoners of war through the streets of Moscow (09:28). 57,000 Germans from a number of German divisions, including the famous 27th Panzer Division and the 65th Infantry Division, march in silence to the rail yards (10:40) to be transported to prison camps. The people of Moscow watch quietly, and water trucks follow the procession (12:42), “washing away the last trace of their march.” The final segment of Issue 47 is “By Request,” which responds to the requests of U.S. servicemen sent in to the Army-Navy Screen Magazine office (13:17) in New York City. The first request is from Private Anthony Luca of the 670th Topographical Company, who requests to his son bowl at his former bowling alley, Tracy Bowling Alleys (12:54), in Wallingford Connecticut. The film shows the bowling alley, where Luca’s wife and son show off their bowling skills. The second request is from Corporal Jenkins in Italy who heard about the cigarette shortage in the U.S. and wants to know what people are doing. The film admits that most people go without, as the shelves of stores are barren (15:05). Standard brands are rare, so people who still want to smoke will smoke whatever they can. Some women have started looking for corncob pipes (15:40) or rolling their own Bull Durham tobacco (15:53). The third and final request comes from five GIs in Belgium who write that they’ve seen a number of beautiful pinup girls, but what they really want to see the most beautiful gal of all. They write, “how about flashing that grand old lady of freedom across the screen?” The Army-Navy Screen Magazine office obliges and shows footage of the Statue of Liberty (16:38), still standing for the values that they American soldiers fight for all over the world.
