Logan Airport opened on September 8, 1923, and at that time it was mainly used by the Massachusetts Air National Guard and the United States Army Air Corps. At the time, it was referred to as "Boston Air Port" at Jeffries Point. The first scheduled commercial passenger flights to start at the new airfield were on Colonial Air Transport between Boston and New York City, starting in 1927. Film opens, silhouette of biplane flying in the sky (Similar to Curtiss SOC Seagull 1934) (0:08). Loening M-18 prepares for take-off (0:24). Man in two-piece suit leans on wing of plane that looks similar to Kinner KE-8 Special Aero (0:31). Hamilton H-18 passenger aircraft (0:44). Ford Trimotor with ‘Ford’ logo printed on side (0:55). Small biplanes take off one-by-one off grass tarmac (1:22). Close-up plane that appears similar to Ryan M-2 strut-based monoplane (the model of Charles Lindbergh’s The Spirit of St. Louis -- this one might be a Ryan Brougham) (2:27). Glimpse of airport hangar that reads ‘Boston Airport Corp.’ (2:36). Crowd forms as they watch pilot wipe down, shine metal exterior of biplane (2:54). Compilation of shots of different planes in the sky, landing; Some shots clearer than others, some distant shadow (3:18-5:06). Small battalion of soldiers in uniform form border around Charles Lindbergh’s The Spirit of St. Louis as it lands, crowds look on excitedly and try and peer over heads of soldiers (5:08). Crowds form along tree-lined street in Boston waiting for parade to begin honoring Lindbergh (6:10). Motorcade of vehicles begin to drive down packed road (cars appear to be similar model to Lincoln Model L), American flags wave from buildings, Lindbergh waves to crowd (6:49). Camera pans airfield, biplanes parked side-by-side (7:21). Udet U 12 Flamingo (7:38). Plane appears similar to Douglas O2-b (7:49). Douglas C-1 prepares for take-off (8:50). Multiple planes in flight at same time, view from ground (10:06). What appears to be Atlantic-Fokker C-2 (11:00). Film ends (11:29). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
